May Update

Even mellow easy-going newborns take a lot of time and attention. Isaac is now five weeks old and growing at an astonishing rate. And smiling. Baby smiles- especially those first few HI I KNOW YOU grins- make up for an awful lot of lost sleep and baby puke.

I'm sketching the Auctioneer, which is probably going to get a couple of title changes, and waiting for some research to be published before I dive back into Solace revisions. All of this is being done long-hand as I've screwed up my right wrist and can't type. Or knit. Or do much of anything. Good thing I can garden one-handed or I would be one cranky monster to live with these days.

My comments have been overrun by spam and I haven't updated my plugins in months. But I'm writing again, at least. That's nice.

Quickie Update

1. Baby due in one month. I veer between total panic and blissful calm.

2. Reading and researching like mad; soon as I get my wrists back and the ability to sit for more than five minutes I'll be ready to write again. Working on Auctioneer; after much research it's clear Solace needs to sit and think about its behavior for a bit longer. But Auctioneer is looking like a fun and fast romp, with lots of shiny parts. I can't resist the shiny parts.

3. Garden planned and seeds ordered and I really want to plant things NOW. But that would be foolish.

4. I've been reading and thinking a lot about the recent (and ongoing) RaceFail '09, and have been heartened by the more thoughtful discussions that have been brought to light. There are a lot of conversations that need to be had, online and off, in the spec fic world and out of it- about race, and gender, and orientation, and class, and ethnicity, and nationality, the spaces where these overlap, and the spaces where they don't. Those conversations aren't supposed to be easy or comfortable. Easy and comfortable is not the point. I have theory and activism in my background, but it's been a long time since I took a look at privilege specifically as it applies to me and mine, and I'm learning a lot. I'm not pointing out specific threads or individuals here as I have been a lurker and a passerby, not a participant, I don't know any of the people actually involved in the discussions, and it seems disrespectful to insert myself into their conversations given those points. But I've been thinking about it too much to not at least acknowledge it.)

Rude Awakening

My first conscious thought this morning was that I needed to restructure Solace entirely, because the real problem is I have too many planets and can't tell the story properly- all those planets are just distractions.

The plot will need to take a new direction, but this also keeps the emphasis on what I wanted to write about in the first place: how we might respond to a new planet.  Also makes it much more about individual characters than their social groups- the conflict is between individuals and not cultural structures. Much better. More fun to write, more interesting to think about.

And I think I figured out how to fuel the ships and account for FTL. So that's all right then.

Holiday Preparations

This is one of those Accountability lists, ensuring that I actually get some house stuff done rather than face public humiliation:

1. Clean out family room toy bins. There's one small set, and I intend to keep it that way.

2. Drag holiday boxes up from the basement.

3. Find tree stand (garage?) and clean it out before we get the tree on Saturday.

4. Find saw and rope needed for tree cutting. Hm. Or make trip to Home Depot on the way to the woods. Do not forget camera: kids and trees and stuff make for good pics. Hope for 50` weather being promised, expect blizzard.

5. Finish up holiday shopping at the Boulder Bookstore and other local shops. Get photos into frames and collect kid art for shipping. Package and mail gifts over the weekend.

6. Drink more eggnog, lament lack of rum.
